What biomanufacturing and scale-up capabilities does the Neptune BioInnovation Centre offer?
Neptune BioInnovation Centre provides industrial-scale biomanufacturing infrastructure designed to support companies as they move from pilot to production.
Capabilities currently available include wet lab space and flexible piloting bays that may support experimentation, process validation, and early-stage scale-up, subject to project requirements and operational readiness.
The Centre has industrial spray drying equipment on site, which is being upgraded to support commercial-scale finishing of bio-based products. In addition, multiple large-scale fermentation vessels are located on site, some of which are operational and available for approved projects, with additional work planned to expand fermentation capacity over time.
As NeptuneBio continues to develop, laboratory space is being renovated and additional fermentation and downstream capabilities are planned to come online, enabling companies to begin planning and initiating scale-up activities while benefiting from increasing capacity in the future.
Who is the facility designed for?
Neptune BioInnovation Centre is designed to support companies at multiple stages of growth across the biomanufacturing and biotechnology spectrum.
Earlier-stage startup companies may access wet lab space and piloting bays to support R&D, process development, and small-scale production, subject to availability and project fit.
Neptune’s large-scale fermentation and finishing infrastructure is designed to support companies that have completed piloting, including fermentation processes up to approximately 10 cubic metre-scale, depending on technology, process characteristics, and operational considerations.
NeptuneBio’s industrial spray drying capability is intended to support both scale-up and established companies by offering an option for converting liquid formulations into stable, dry products for food, feed, and specialty applications. Inquiries from established companies seeking additional spray drying capacity are welcome.
How does Neptune BioInnovation plan to support companies beyond infrastructure?
In addition to physical infrastructure, NeptuneBio seeks to act as a collaborative partner in the scale-up process.
NeptuneBio may facilitate access to technical expertise, operational support, and connections within Nova Scotia’s and Canada’s broader bioinnovation ecosystem, including research institutions, investors, and commercialization partners.
As the Centre grows, NeptuneBio aims to expand its role as a convenor and catalyst, supporting companies in addressing scale-up challenges progressing toward market entry.
Can multiple companies operate from the Centre, and how does tenancy or access work?
Yes. Neptune BioInnovation Centre is designed as a shared-use facility and may support multiple companies concurrently, subject to availability and operational requirements.
Access models are intended to be flexible and may include short-term project access, dedicated space, or longer-term tenancy, depending on a company’s stage, technical needs, and production requirements, and subject to agreement.
This shared-use approach is intended to lower capital barriers, improve utilization of specialized infrastructure, and support more efficient scale-up.
How do companies get started or inquire about using the Centre?
Companies interested in exploring opportunities with NeptuneBio are encouraged to contact the Centre through the Contact page or by emailing [email protected].
The NeptuneBio team will seek to understand a company’s technology, scale-up objectives, and timelines, and discuss how the Centre’s current or planned capabilities may align with their needs.
Early engagement is encouraged, as companies may be able to access existing resources and provide input into future infrastructure planning as the Centre continues to develop.
